Back in the day, orthodontia meant enduring heavy braces and rubber bands for years at a time. Today, braces are lighter and can sometimes be installed on the backs of teeth to make them virtually invisible. Many patients pay for dental care out of pocket, either with cash or by whipping out the plastic. Bank loans can be obtained to cover major expenses, at least for patients with excellent credit. Patients with marginal or poor credit are less likely to be approved for bank loans.
